The next morning felt different.

By the time she got to work, the office felt colder. Not in temperature but in presence. People moved differently around her now. As if they sensed she was no longer just another employee. She was... something else.

Daniel was already in the conference room when she arrived. Papers were scattered across the table, a laptop open with a grainy security feed paused mid-frame.
“You’re early,” he said, glancing up.
“So are you,” Claire replied. Her voice was level, but inside, the image of Ethan still haunted her.
Daniel pointed to the laptop. “Security footage from last Thursday. Someone entered your office at 7:42 PM. You were already gone.”
She leaned in.
The figure was hooded, fast. They moved like they’d done it before.
“Is there a badge record?”
“No. Whoever it was used a temporary access card. Untraceable.”
Claire sat down slowly. “So we don’t know who they are.”
“We don’t know for sure,” Daniel said. “But I have a theory.”
She looked at him.
And that’s when he said a name that knocked the breath out of her.
**“Vanessa.”*
Later that day, Claire tried to focus on her work. But her hands kept trembling.
Vanessa?
Could it really be her? Or was that exactly what someone wanted her to believe?
Just before lunch, Harper messaged her again.
> **Subject:** Found something buried.
> Check the archive folder. Last quarter’s project deck. Open with care.
Claire opened it.
Buried inside an old project archive — one she hadn’t touched in months — was a folder labeled **“Internal Only.”**
Inside: several of her own designs. Slightly altered. Rebranded. And submitted weeks ago under **someone else’s name**.
Daniel was right.
This wasn’t just sabotage. It was **a heist**.
Someone had been stealing her work, rebranding it, and getting credit for months.
And at the top of one document… was Vanessa’s signature.

“Look through it.”

“You found this today?”
She nodded. “Harper helped. They’re using my work. She’s using my work.”
Daniel looked genuinely furious. “This is more than corporate theft. This is career-ending if it gets out.”
Claire stepped closer. “So what do we do?”
He looked at her and for the first time, she saw something raw in his eyes.
Not fear.
Loyalty.
“We Will fight back.”

But that night, Claire returned home to find her apartment door slightly open.
Her stomach dropped.
She stepped inside carefully.
Nothing was missing. Nothing broken.
Except… one thing.
Her **photo with Daniel**, taken during a company retreat and quietly taped to her fridge, was gone.
In its place was a sticky note.
**“Trust is earned. And sometimes… it’s fatal.”**
