Claire’s hands trembled as she set the photo down on the kitchen counter. Her eyes darted back to the message: *“You’re being watched.”*

And now Daniel was texting her late at night, saying he needs to talk, Urgently.

Her instincts screamed at her to ignore it. But her heart... her heart was already reaching for the door.

.....

.....

Daniel was waiting at the café down the street, the same one where her coffee had been “accidentally” taken. This time, there were no customers. Just him, seated in a back booth, a faint tension clinging to his frame.

“Claire,” he said, standing as she approached. “Thanks for coming.”

“I wasn’t sure I should,” she admitted, sliding into the booth. “Especially after what I just received.”

He leaned forward. “You got it too?”

She blinked. “What do you mean?”

Daniel reached into his coat pocket and pulled out an envelope identical to hers. Inside: a photo of Claire. The same one. Same angle. Same moment. But on the back of his version was a different message.

**“Protect her. She's next.”**

Claire’s breath caught. “Who... who would do this?”

“I have no idea,” he replied. “But this isn’t a prank. Someone’s digging through your life.”

“And trying to control it,” she whispered.

Daniel’s voice dropped. “There’s something else. Vanessa and two others submitted a pitch today… using one of your previous ideas.”

Claire’s heart sank. “I never shared that deck. I only saved it to my cloud.”

His expression hardened. “That means someone has access to your files.”

She stared at him, disbelief quickly giving way to fury. “They’re trying to erase me. Discredit me.”

Daniel looked straight into her. “And I won’t let that happen.”

His words were simple, but the weight behind them felt immense. And dangerous.

Claire and Daniel in a tense office confrontation — she holds a mysterious photo, and he stands protectively, surrounded by shadows and secrets.

That night, Claire barely slept. Every shadow seemed to whisper. Every creak in the wall made her flinch.

By morning, exhaustion clung to her like a second skin.

At work, she walked through the front doors like she didn’t belong there anymore, like the building itself had turned against her.

Vanessa was already at her desk, sipping coffee, smiling too much. Claire’s stomach turned.

“Rough night?” Vanessa asked sweetly. “You look... tired.”

Claire ignored her, pushing toward her office. But just as she sat down, an alert popped up on her computer.

**Subject:** URGENT: Employee Conduct Meeting – 3:30 PM

**Participants:** Claire Morgan, Daniel Grant, HR Representative

Her stomach twisted.

She hadn’t done anything wrong.

But someone wanted to make it look like she had.

---

When the meeting finally came, Claire entered the room with her spine straight, eyes calm, even as her heart raced. The HR officer was stiff and unreadable. Daniel was already seated, his jaw tight.

The HR officer began reading: “There has been a report of misconduct involving unauthorized use of proprietary marketing materials.”

Claire’s blood ran cold.

Vanessa.

It had to be.

She opened her mouth to speak, but Daniel raised a hand.

“I requested this meeting,” he said. “To address an attempt to sabotage one of our top team members.”

Claire stared at him. So did HR.

“I have evidence,” Daniel continued, pulling a flash drive from his suit pocket, “I have proof that Claire made that presentation by herself. The time stamps, file history, and login details all show it came from her and no one else.”

HR’s tone shifted. “That’s… unexpected.”

Daniel looked at Claire. “What’s more concerning is that someone accessed her cloud account without authorization. This isn’t a conduct issue. It’s corporate theft.”

Claire finally spoke, voice steady: “And I think I know who’s behind it.”

---

As she left the room, Claire could feel eyes watching her — but not with malice anymore. With fear. Respect. Maybe both.

In the elevator, Daniel stood beside her, silent. When the doors closed, she looked up at him.

“Why did you help me?”

He hesitated. Then, quietly: “Because I know what it’s like to have your future stolen from you.”

The doors opened. Claire stepped out, but her mind stayed with his words.

She wasn’t just a pawn anymore.

She was waking up.

And someone was going to regret trying to erase her.

...

....
