Claire stared at the note on her fridge, her heart pounding so loud it muffled everything else. The message wasn’t just a warning. It was personal. Someone had been inside her home. Someone who knew her and knew about Daniel.

She grabbed her phone with shaking fingers and called him.

“Claire?” he answered quickly. “Everything okay?”

“No. Someone was in my apartment.”

Daniel’s voice hardened instantly. “Are you hurt?”

“No, but they left a note. And they took... a photo of us.”

A beat of silence followed.

“I’m coming over.”

---

Twenty minutes later, Daniel was at her door. He looked different not in his appearance, but in the way he carried himself. There was a tension in his body, a protectiveness in his eyes that hadn’t been there before.

“Let me see the note,” he said, stepping inside.

Claire handed it to him.

He read it, jaw clenched. “They’re escalating.”

“Whoever it is, they’re not just trying to ruin my job anymore,” she said quietly. “They’re trying to unnerve me. Break me.”

Daniel looked around her apartment. “You need to stay somewhere else. Tonight.”

She crossed her arms. “And go where?”

“My place.”

Claire hesitated.

“Claire,” he said softly, “I’m not suggesting it for any reason except your safety. I have security in my building. Cameras. You won’t be alone.”

She nodded slowly. “Okay.”

---

Daniel’s apartment was nothing like she expected. Sleek, minimalist, filled with dark tones and quiet music playing low in the background. But it wasn’t cold. It was... private. Like a man who had built high walls and kept very few people close.

He gave her the guest room.

But she couldn’t sleep.

At around 2 a.m., Claire found herself in the kitchen, pouring water when she noticed the light under Daniel’s door.

He hadn’t gone to sleep either.

She knocked gently. “You up?”

“Yeah,” he replied. “Come in.”

She stepped inside.

Daniel sat on the edge of his bed, a laptop beside him, files scattered.

“You’re still working?”

“I can’t stop thinking about what’s happening to you.”

Claire leaned against the doorframe. “You mean us.”

He looked up at her.

And for the first time, something unspoken passed between them.

A shift.

A moment.

Daniel and Claire stand close, eyes locked, sharing an unspoken connection and a quiet spark, surrounded by tension and emotion.

“Claire,” he said, his voice low and steady, “I don’t think this is just about work anymore. Someone is targeting you… and I have a feeling it goes deeper than you or I realize.”

She stepped forward. “I feel like I’m standing in the middle of a storm that hasn’t even started yet.”

Daniel stood slowly. “Then we hold on. And we don’t let it tear you apart.”

Claire met his eyes .... close now, too close and for a second, her breath caught.

But before she could say anything, he turned away.

“You should try to get some sleep.”

---

The next morning, things changed.

Harper called her first.

> “Claire, we’ve got a problem. The pitch you were preparing, it’s been leaked to a competitor. And they submitted it… yesterday.”

Her blood went cold. “What?”

> “Your name isn’t on it. But I found the version they submitted. Same concept. Same structure. Someone stole it and used a third-party agency to cover their tracks.”

Claire hung up and immediately forwarded the call details to Daniel.

They met in his car, parked just outside the office building.

“This is getting out of hand,” she said, hands trembling.

Daniel turned to her. “This is sabotage at the highest level. And I think I know who’s pulling the strings.”

Claire looked up. “Who?”

He stared ahead. “It’s not Vanessa. It’s someone even higher.”

Her heart dropped.

“You think it’s... upper management?”

“I think it’s someone with enough power to hide their tracks. Enough influence to scare people into silence. But they made one mistake” he looked at her — “they underestimated you.”

Claire felt the heat rise to her throat.

This wasn’t just about surviving anymore.

It was about uncovering the truth.

And taking back everything that had been stolen.
