''Chapter 2: Shadows in the Light''
The sky outside was a dull grey, but inside the office, tension shimmered like static electricity.
Claire returned to her desk, her mind spinning with Daniel’s words. It wasn’t just what he said — it was the way he looked at her, like he saw straight through the surface. Like he *cared*.
But Daniel wasn’t someone she could afford to get close to. Not with the rumors already circling. Not with everything at stake.
“Claire, you okay?” Emily asked again, wheeling her chair closer.
Claire nodded. “Yeah, just tired.”
“Uh-huh.” Emily smirked. “Or maybe it has something to do with our tall, sharp jawed manager giving you private meetings in locked rooms?”
Claire rolled her eyes. “It’s not like that.”
Emily leaned in, whispering, “Then explain the way he looks at you like he’s memorizing your heartbeat.”
Before Claire could answer, a shrill voice cut through the office.
“Oh, *Claire*, you spilled something on the report.”
It was Vanessa. Her rival. Polished, ruthless, and always perfectly timed.
Claire looked down. Her printed pages had a faint coffee stain across the corner. When had that happened?
Vanessa snatched the papers off the table. “You should be more careful. These are going to the executive team, you know.”
Claire forced a polite smile. “Thanks for letting me know. I’ll reprint them.”
Vanessa’s lips curled. “Some of us don’t get second chances.”
Claire’s chest tightened. There it was — that passive-aggressive jab, coated in sugar but laced with poison.
That night, rain fell harder. Claire skipped the company dinner and walked home alone, heels clicking on the slick pavement. She didn’t mind the rain. It made her feel less alone — like the sky understood her too.
When she reached her apartment, her phone buzzed.
**Unknown Number**:
*“Don't let them erase you. You're stronger than you think.”*
Her fingers hovered over the screen. No name. No ID. Just that message.
**Another buzz**.
**Unknown Number**:
*“You left something behind today. Check your mailbox.”*
Claire’s heart began to race. She hesitated… then stepped back into the hallway.
Her mailbox creaked open.
Inside was a small envelope. No name. Just her apartment number, scribbled hastily.
Inside it: a photo.
A photo of her at the office, taken that afternoon. She was sitting at her desk, looking tired, unaware of the camera. On the back, written in neat handwriting:
**"You're being watched. Choose your allies carefully."**
Her blood ran cold.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed again. This time, it was Daniel.
**Daniel Grant**:
*“Are you home? Something’s come up. I need to speak to you. Now.”*
Claire stared at the screen, her fingers trembling. Her mind reeled with questions.
Who sent the photo?
Why was someone watching her?
And why did Daniel sound... afraid?
She looked out the window, into the dark night beyond. The city lights sparkled like stars — so far away, so unreachable.
Whatever this was, it was no longer just office politics.
Something bigger was unfolding.
Something dangerous.
And Claire was at the centre of it.
